KUTX Our Favorite Songs of 2022 Living Pins – “Oh Yeah“
December 5, 2022
“Last year, this duo, featuring veterans from Austin 90’s outfits Sixteen Deluxe and Ursa Major, scored with their Freaky Little Monster Children EP. This year it’s a double A-side single (which received international airplay). With fun, smart lyrics set to psychedelic garage rock dabbed with a touch of T. Rex, “Oh Yeah” jumped out of the radio with authority and a wink.”

Simon: One of things I can really recognize when I hear a bit of music, is the FUN. The fun that they were having when they made that. And they were having such a great time making that music. In fact, if you do check out Living Pins, you will hear that in all of their music. They don’t have a lot of it out there, but they are having such a laugh when they’re doing this stuff. And I think it’s wonderful. They don’t even … you can tell they don’t expect any great sort of … they’re not pretentious. They’re not pretending to greatness. Even though greatness may bestow itself upon them. But they’re just out there having a laugh. Just doing something. “Wow, we can do this. We can play.” You can hear it in the way that she sings, the way they both sing. You can hear it in the way that they play their instruments. You can hear it in the guitars. Did you hear that ‘Wha-oh, wha-oh, wha-oh, wha-oh”? It just keeps going through it. I mean, it’s just full of joy, the joy of making music. And I applaud it for that. I really do. It’s a great track.
And also, it is the source of this week’s [episode] title, “Mascara rotunda” [singing]. And the only reason that word “rotunda” is there is cuz it rhymes with “First there was lightning, then there was thunder” [singing]. You know, I love that! I love that! You know people have kind of asked me about my lyrics and what they mean and why. And a lot of it is because it rhymes and it sounds good. And they’ve written a whole song about shit that sounds good and that’s the whole point of it. You know “You get me going, oh yeah”. And you get me going, you get me thinking of these different things, you know “Mascara rotunda”, “Picasso Paloma, the evening had a certain aroma”. It’s just brilliant! Absolutely brilliant.
Katy: Well, they sent us this song. And I forward all the tracks to the boss. And he immediately said “I love, I want to play this. I love this.” So, I went back to… they emailed me directly. They are from Austin, TX. Pam Peltz and Carrie Clark. One of their producers worked with Santana and Dandy Warhols, so they’re… you know it’s not a total garage band type of thing. But they describe their sound as “upbeat,” which is what Simon said, “with a scruff of elegance”. This is the second track that they’ve sent to us, so clearly they are WHOOOSH! listeners. So I asked them, what’s the song about? And they said, “As far as the words go, they’re kind of about a really great night out on the town. But also about overstimulation, way too much information, which can also be fun.” And so it was a full on rock out. I was thrilled with this song and I was… I don’t listen to lyrics like you do. And this actually sort of forced me.
Simon: It’s a real fun lyric… very fun lyric. I’m really happy to play it. It’s great.

“The kind of aggro flowing psych that makes me very, very happy… Hearing the bright harmonies and the solid sway of the breaks puts me in a good place and I want to hear more ASAP.”

“Oh Yeah” single premiere in The Big Takeover 2022
8 August 2022
Austin, TX band The Living Pins premiere a new single today via The Big Takeover. The song, “Oh Yeah” is part of a new EP of perfect summertime tunes. This one features a constant buzzing groove and cheery vocals akin to the British Invasion meets Britpop. As the band explains to Big Takeover:
“The two songs that The Living Pins are releasing this summer are like two different people. ‘Oh Yeah’ is the naughty rebel rock ’n’ roller and ‘Chateau’ is the sparkly FM radio song that even your mom could listen to. It’s The Stones versus The Beatles. Or Oasis versus Blur.”
