10/21/23

Carrie Clark of The Living Pins made a special appearance at the A Curious Mix of People (University of Texas Press) book launch event at the Central Austin Library and talked about the beloved weirdness of the 90s Austin music scene and being front woman for the Trance Syndicate and later Warner Bros. Records band Sixteen Deluxe. Here’s an excerpt. Also on stage L to R — Richard Whymark, Greg Beets, and Laurie Gallardo.

Richard: “Didn’t you say you almost became Gwen Stefani?”

Carrie: “Oh my God, yeah.  At the time when Sixteen Deluxe was getting courted by every label in the book.  Cuz it’s like ‘Oh, who’s the next Nirvana?’ or the next whatever.  And yeah, I think one of those offers was ‘Hey, we’ll sign you guys but we get to decide what Carrie wears and we get to decide what her hair looks like and we get to decide all of these things about image.’”

Laurie: “No.”

Carrie: “We said ‘No’”.

Raven video premiere and Q&A

April 14, 2021

“How would you describe your sound?

…Pam Peltz: For the EP songs, it usually started with me going for a dive under the riff rock and I would bring some creepy crawlies back with me. I’d show them to Carrie, and Carrie is like the lab technician. She should have a white lab coat and a bright blinding light strapped to her forehead like a third eye. She’s very gentle and patient and she builds these sound cocoons around the creepy crawlies that I bring–it’s like she knits little sweaters for them …”

EP premiere and Q&A

April 6, 2021

“… do you both now see [the band] as a continuation of what started in the mid Nineties or as an evolution of experiences you’ve gained since the project was placed on hiatus? …

CC: I saw Pam play “Raven” at a solo show and it sounded like a T. Rex song, so I wanted to do it and head in that direction…

PP: Also, at a certain point you just realize that rock & roll is eternal. You look in the rock mirror and it looks back at you and says, “Rock on, my friend…”

PP: As to the future, we don’t think too hard about the way things will specifically play out because they never happen that way anyway. It’s like traveling. When you hit the ground, just have a map in your pocket, ’cuz you never know where you’ll end up.”
